Wickström: One doctor, not many

MP Henrik Wickström (SFP) is pleased that a named doctor model is finally being implemented in Finland. The government is investing EUR 40 million in developing the model that SFP has long been working towards.

“Finally, the named doctor system can be developed in all the wellbeing services counties. The purpose of care is to create safety, and we can do that by offering a single, named doctor who knows the patient and their background. SFP has been working towards this for a long time, and it is finally coming into effect,” Wickström says.

The objective of this is that as many patients as possible will have access to a named doctor and nurse, with support from other trained social and health care personnel.

“By developing the named doctor model, we can avoid unnecessary medical examinations and improve the quality of care, especially for people with chronic illness. A doctor who is familiar with the patient’s background can provide better and more expedient care. It is good for the patient and also saves time and money,” Wickström explains.

SFP has long been making efforts for continuity of care and a more humane model, and they are now coming into fruition. Having a fixed, personal contact in the medical community also reinforces patients’ linguistic rights.
