Biaudet: We must work for peace

The primary task of the United Nations is to preserve world peace. Today, on United Nations Day, we are reminded of the significance of the UN and of the fact that its role is more important than ever. Russia’s nuclear weapons threat and invasion of Ukraine have completely shifted the international security scenario.

“We have had an unpleasant reminder that peace is fragile and cannot be taken for granted. With the rise of unscrupulous powers, we are seeing human rights being trampled and international agreements shattered. Everyone’s efforts are needed for the peace process, and in this acute situation, the UN must play a more active role,” says Eva Biaudet, member of the Finnish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

Previously, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and condemning Russia’s nuclear threat.

“It is important that the world condemns Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine and its threats to use nuclear weapons. The price paid by the Ukrainian people for the war cannot be compared to the consequences that the rest of us are facing. They are paying for it with their lives, while the rest of the world is only suffering higher energy and food prices. We have to do all we can to prevent any further escalation.”

“We must remember that peace in the world and in Europe is something for which we are all responsible. Energy price rises and shortages are already affecting our daily lives. We must work together to make it through this difficult situation,” Biaudet says.

Biaudet also points out that concrete actions are needed, not just nice words. Finland must continue to support the Ukrainian people with humanitarian aid and by participating in efforts to secure the withdrawal of Russia.
